Muscle building stacks are two or more supplements that when combined together have a more synergistic effect in order to help the bodybuilder build the most muscle in the shortest amount of time. Since there are hundreds of different supplements out there to stack with the potential combinations are endless. It’s no secret that bodybuilders take a lot of supplements in order to attain their goals, but what muscle building stacks are more preferred than others?

Despite the stereotype, bodybuilders are not dummies. They know their bodies well, and have a keen understanding of how supplements work on a more biological level and so should you. When you begin to understand how your body responds to different foods, lifts, exercises, and supplements you can begin to have a more intimate understanding as to how you build muscle and what muscle building stack would suit your needs.

You also have to be honest with yourself as far as where you currently are in your goals and supplement based on where you would like to be without going over-board. For example, some who is a novice bodybuilder who has to lose weight and gain muscle should stack their supplements completely different from someone who is a seasoned bodybuilder who is shaping and cutting for a competition. The novice bodybuilder may only stack 2-4 supplements whereas the seasoned bodybuilder may stack 8-12 supplements in order to meet their goals. It’s all relative.

So when you’re considering the best muscle building stacks for you, be honest in your personal assessment. If you’re a weekend warrior than you may only need a protein supplement, creatine, and a multi-vitamin. As you progress in your training you might add some BCAA supplements, glutamine supplementsnitric oxide supplementspre workout supplements etc… The more dedicated you are to your goals coupled with your lifting experience will be a good indicator as to what makes up the best muscle building stack for you and your body.

Muscle Building Stacks: Beginner

If you’re just starting to take supplements in order to build muscle then you’ve probably scratched your head and wondered what in the world you should be taking to help build muscle. Well for starters, don’t be in a rush to buy every supplement under the sun. The process of building muscle is a journey, not a destination so take your time and always start with the basics:
Protein

Whey, Casin, or a blend? Always begin with a whey supplement and consume it after you work out so your body can use up the nutrients to repair newly damaged muscles. Casin protein should be taken at night because of its slow digesting properties. It will help you build muscle while you sleep so a good idea would be to include it as your last meal of the day. A protein blend can be taken at any time as a meal replacement or as your post workout shake.
Multi Vitamin

Should I really explain why you should take a multi vitamin? I didn’t think so.

That’s it for a beginner. Keep it simple and just work on establishing your workout routine and as you progress you can add to your basic muscle building stack. Can you add more? Sure, but the main point is that you have to be comfortable with taking supplements on a regular basis so if you feel you need something extra to throw in there than you could throw in a pre workout supplement or some creatine, but if your wanting to include these extra’s just because you’re in a rush then try to fight that urge. Once you’ve laid down your foundation then you can start to add the extras and that when you begin to venture into the Intermediate category of muscle building stacks.

Muscle Building Stacks: Intermediate

The intermediate category is for people who have already established their workout routines, are already supplementing with a protein supplement and multi-vitamin and are now looking for a little extra. So in addition to your foundation supplements, you can begin to add things like:
Pre workout supplement

A pre workout supplement is complex and can mean many things, but for the purpose of building muscle then your pre workout should include caffeine, nitric oxide, and creatine as the main ingredients. If you’ve never tried a pre workout supplement before than do yourself a favor and never take a full dose because these supplements pack quite a punch, but are very useful in pushing you to lift harder and longer.

Creatine

Creatine supplements come in many forms, but they all do the same thing which is to stimulate ATP production. This is important to you because ATP is what powers not only your muscles but your entire body. Including this important supplement into your arsenal will make a huge impact on your muscular development.

Glutamine

Glutamine is an amino acid and can be found in many protein based foods. As a supplement glutamine is used as a pre workout supplement and an intra-workout supplement to help replenish your depleted glutamine stores in your body.

BCAA’s

BCAA’s (branched chain amino acid) are essential amino acids that are the basic building blocks of muscle synthesis. BCAA’s can be found in proteins, beans, and some veggies and is used as a post workout supplement to help repair your muscles.

These are the basic intermediate types of supplements that you should take when you’re comfortable with your program and want to kick it up a notch. You are not limited to just these above. You can mix and match supplements to best suit your needs, but the main idea here is that you can expand your supplement stack to better target your desired results. Many people you see in the gym are at the Intermediate level and as such, they typically like to experiment with different supplements as well as supplement variations. So what’s the difference between the intermediate level and the advanced level? Not much, just more supplements!

  2. Working out is not a hobby, but a way of life and you’re into the small details that in a lot of ways make all the difference.

The advanced muscle building stack is the total package. There is no one stack that can define what the advanced stack is but probably looks something like Kris Gethin’s Professional Stack:
